South Carolina Trooper Kenny Saunders can’t wrap his head around yet another disappearance in small town Baxter, South Carolina. Obsessing over the locations of the disappearances, he goes back to them again and again.
Drawn by the pooling of rainwater and the unusual eucalyptus that has sprung up where the women vanished, fireflies are massing, flashing their unfathomable messages in the dark.
But there's something horribly familiar about these fireflies. Kenny knows in the depths of his aching heart that his wife is in mortal danger and there are fates worse than death.
